How often do you look around your home and become overwhelmed? I know the feeling. I do the same. I mean, I have more ideas than you could put in a bucket and carry around. I want to do everything at once and that is not practical either. How do you decide where to start? What do I do with the space? Will I love it for a long time? So many questions start swirling in our heads when we begin to think about projects in our home. The number one reason why people hire me, they get confused and don’t know where to start.

After thirty years of design, you would think that my home would be all done. Think again. I am not any different than you, I get busy, I run out of funds, or life throws something else at me and there I go chasing that bus. Most of the rooms have been done more than once in my home but just like me, they are always evolving and changing. That doesn’t mean that I throw everything out and begin again. I keep what I love, change what is not working or what I am tired of and keep moving on to the next project.

Well, the time has come. For years, the grandkids have shared a room to spend the night in and though there are four beds in the room, they only sleep in two twins because they love each other so much. It is crazy but our trundle beds never get used. Unfortunately, they are growing up and keeping everyone in the same room doesn’t make sense anymore. The girls need a room for the girls and the boys need one for the boys. Now you may be thinking that this is a lot of work for the one or two times a month that they come over, but for me, it is not. I don’t want them to ever run out of reasons to want to come to Mimi’s house. So I do what I must.

There are only three bedrooms in our home and one has been my beautiful office for several years now. In fact, this office came about as a “One Room Challenge” event that is hosted by Better Homes and Gardens each year. In the challenge, you take six weeks and transform one room in your home. There are so many brilliant designs that come from this event each year and this is the one that I came up with. Now with my work schedule and my lack of DIY skills, six weeks was seriously cutting it close but I made it. I still love this office but it will be an excellent room for the “grandgirls”. A space where they can be as girly as they want. I will add a few features to it, one being a queen bed that will also double as the guest bedroom bed so my guests don’t have to sleep in twin beds. (LOL)

So you see, we all have those spots in our home. The spaces that are longing for something to be done with them. I have the perfect challenge for you. We are going to have our own “One Room Challenge” of sorts. It will begin on May 5th. Now for those of you that just need a little challenge to get you going, consider it done. We will have weekly check-ins, and you will let everyone know what you have been up to. We will have plenty of encouragement and a place where you can come and ask questions that you may have during the process. At the end, we will showcase all of your hard work on the Alisa Berry Designs page and let you get all of the glory. We might even have a little competition. I am still working on that part.

I can hear your thoughts,”I would love to participate but I have no idea what I am doing”, “I need help”, and the “I want you to come and give me advice”, or “I want you to give me a plan”. I have you covered. Each week leading up to the challenge, I will be giving advice on different ideas for different rooms in your home that you could do in this time frame and with different budgets. Any room that you feel that you have the budget and skills for or that you have the budget and the help for, is game for the challenge. More than anything, I want to give you reasons why you should do it and help you overcome the procrastination.
